Explore the technology of photovoltaics as a building material—current and future trends including customized PV products and technology directions. There will be an introduction to technical issues: PV modules and related products like inverters; electrical design concepts for grid-connected and off-grid installations.
Building America Projects in the Field: Emerging Technologies for Homebuilders Friday, November 12, 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Location: Oregon 203
The North American homebuilding industry is notoriously under funded for research and development. This public/private initiative is one of the few exceptions. Each speaker in this workshop will present one innovative technology that their team is developing through work with homebuilders and industry partners, giving colleagues a preview of new building methods that will be available to homebuilders and designers in the years to come.
Envisioning Fully Sustainable Buildings—Using The Natural Step and LEED Friday, November 12, 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Location: Portland 252
A workshop for experienced LEED practitioners on how the Natural Step framework can be a bridge to conceive fully sustainable building projects. Participants will learn how to use The Natural Step (TNS) as a visioning tool that complements the tactical strategies rewarded by the LEED green building rating system.
“Smart Growth—Portland’s Legacy & Future Promise” Friday, November 12, 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Location: Portland 253
A distinguished lineup of national, regional, and local policy makers will share their perspectives on political dimensions of the city’s urban design history, describing the significant actors, policies and tactics that have promoted smart growth and green development.
Key local developers and planners will share case studies of three neighborhoods in Portland’s central business district and explain how policies, incentives, and public/private investments and agreements have influenced development plans and visions.
Building Performance in Use: What Works and What Needs to be Improved Friday, November 12, 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Location: Portland 251/258
This workshop will address what post-occupancy evaluation (POE) is telling us about building performance, based on the presenters’ experience of evaluating technical, environmental and human issues in buildings over the past 25 years, largely in the UK (e.g. the Probe series of published POEs), but increasingly internationally.

Cook+Fox Architects will present the design and high performance aspects of the Bank of America Tower at One Bryant Park , New York, NY. Richard Cook + Bob Fox will discuss the faceted crystal 2.2 million sq. ft. skyscraper form and the integration of the environmental strategies of the building, why it will pursue a LEED® Core and Shell Platinum rating, and how it will be achieved.
The World Trade Center: Green Building and Public-Private Partnerships Wednesday, November 10, 2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Location: Portland Ballroom 255
One of the most closely watched real estate developments in U.S. history, the new World Trade Center will feature the first LEED-certified office building in New York City and many other green innovations. This panel will discuss the unique aspects of the project, including Sustainable Design Guidelines developed through a collaboration between developer Silverstein Properties and various government and environmental groups. Speakers will include representatives of the developer's architects and engineers, as well as government and non-profit organizations that have worked on the project.
Building Design & Construction's "White Paper on Sustainability--Progress Report 2004" Wednesday, November 10, 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Location: Room A106
Building Design & Construction magazine (circulation 76,011) will present the findings of its "White Paper on Sustainability: Progress Report 2004," a comprehensive follow-up to the publication's award-winning 2003 report on the green building movement. Specific recommendations for the green building agenda will also be presented, and audience participation and discussion will be invited.

Managing the Integrated Design Process Workshop Friday, November 12, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Location: Oregon 201
This workshop addresses process dynamics from framing the initial design problem through developing practical strategies, to implementing an effective workplan. Special focus will be given to critical management and communication skills and participants will walk away armed with a new methodology, which will transform the way they create buildings and organize their firms.

LEED-NC Overview (Introductory) Monday, November 8, 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Location: A107-109
This half-day lecture style workshop will introduce the LEED Green Building Rating System and is intended to address an audience with very little knowledge of green and sustainable building design practices. This session will provide attendees with a general overview of the USGBC’s LEED structure and philosophy, the LEED project certification process, and applicable LEED Resources. The goal of this workshop is to provide the foundation knowledge for owners/developers/users having the ultimate decision-making responsibilities for their organization’s project development.
Understanding LEED-NC (Intermediate) Monday, November 8, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Location: B113-114
This full-day session is for building owners, facility managers, design teams and any building industry stakeholder interested in projects that provide high performance “green” techniques in an environmentally sensitive and economical package. The workshop will cover the technical requirements of the LEED Green Building Rating System for New Construction & Major Renovations (LEED-NC) and provide an overview of the knowledge needed for taking the LEED Accreditation exam. This session will provide attendees with an understanding of how LEED is being used nationally to define various levels of green project design, the resources available for pursuing LEED projects, and a credit-by-credit review of the LEED Green Building Rating System. Completion of the LEED-NC Overview is not required to attend this session.
Applying LEED-NC (Advanced) Monday, November 8, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Location: B117-118
This full-day workshop will provide a detailed examination of the process required for applying the LEED-NC Rating System to specific project types. This lecture/hands-on style workshop will prepare design and construction professionals for pursuing LEED project certification by building on their knowledge of the LEED Rating System criteria, tools and resources. This workshop covers: LEED in the context of integrated design, green and sustainable design resources that will help enable your project to achieve LEED certification, including a “How to” session with a focus on particularly difficult credits, and the LEED documentation process. Completion of the Understanding LEED Workshop or thorough knowledge of the LEED Rating System and general green building practices is strongly recommended.
LEED for Existing Buildings (LEED-EB) Monday, November 8, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Location: B115-116
This full-day session for building owners, facility managers and design teams will cover the technical requirements and processes for achieving certification under the LEED for Existing Buildings Rating System. This session will address strategies to advance existing buildings to a sustainable level of operation, upgrade and reduce building operating costs, solve building operation problems, improve indoor environment, and support higher productivity of building occupants.
LEED for Commercial Interiors (LEED-CI) Monday, November 8, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Location: A106
This full-day training session for building tenants and designers will provide an in-depth discussion of the LEED for Commercial Interiors (LEED-CI) credit requirements and certification process. This training will address the basic training principles of sustainability as they relate to tenant improvement projects and present the definitive standard for what constitutes a green interior. Highlights include technologies and strategies for achieving the LEED credits to optimize performance of leased spaces.
LEED for Retail Projects Monday, November 8, 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Location: A103-104
This half-day session will address how retail projects have issues that differ from typical office buildings, such as process loads, occupancy types, waste profiles, controllability, comfort issues, lighting, and metrics which present challenges for defining the move toward sustainability. Owners, operators and design teams of retail facilities are encouraged to attend this introduction to the Retail Application Guide of the LEED for New Construction & Major Renovation Rating System.
LEED for Laboratory Projects Monday, November 8, 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Location: A105
This half-day session for professionals who own, design, build, operate and maintain laboratory facilities will present general information on leveraging LEED concepts into lab projects and will provide detailed information on the draft of the LEED-NC Application Guide for Laboratories. In addition, the instructors will present successful case studies and lessons learned from laboratory projects implementing green strategies.
LEED for School Projects Monday, November 8, 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Location: A107-109 This half-day session will provide guidance for project teams using LEED to design and construct K-12 schools, as well as an introduction to the LEED for Schools Application Guide currently under development. Case studies of LEED registered and certified projects will illustrate successful strategies and practices for improving school design and performance.
LEED for Healthcare Projects Monday, November 8, 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Location: A105
This half-day session for professionals who own, design, build, operate and maintain healthcare facilities will present general information on leveraging LEED concepts into healthcare projects and will provide detailed information on the draft of the LEED-NC Application Guide for Healthcare. This half-day session for vendors and product sales representatives will address how a product(s) may contribute towards applicable LEED credits. While this workshop will not discuss development of green products, our emphasis will focus on how manufacturers can share their knowledge to help the building industry chart a path towards sustainability.

This half-day session will provide insight on LEED project cost issues including professional fees, construction costs and life-cycle costs based on current data from LEED-certified projects and available research. This workshop will provide tools to calculate and evaluate cost and benefits of LEED certification on a given project, and how to get maximum benefit from chosen resources. Learn strategies to build environmentally sound projects at a reasonable cost.
Commissioning LEED Projects Friday, November 12, 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 a.m. Location: D135-136
This half-day session for building owners and designers will explain the building commissioning process as required by LEED and will provide information on commissioning benefits, costs and resources available to projects. The workshop will address the commissioning agent’s role as it applies to a project’s design strategies and documentation for LEED certification.
LEED for General Contractors/Construction Managers Friday, November 12, 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 a.m. Location: F149-150
This half-day session will review LEED as it applies to general contractors and construction managers. The workshop will explain the intent of the technical requirements as they apply to the design and construction team. Particular emphasis will be given to the materials, resources, and indoor environmental quality credits. This session will also address strategies for general contractor and subcontractor documentation and tracking project costs.
Incorporating LEED into Project Specifications Friday, November 12, 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Location: F149-150
This half-day session will provide participants with an understanding of the basic principles of specifications as they apply to green building. Project team members will be provided with strategies to develop construction specifications appropriate to project goals and tips for achieving LEED compliance.
Using LEED-NC on Historic Projects Friday, November 12, 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Location: B117-119
This half-day session will discuss the adaptive reuse of historic projects and how to minimize impact on historic resources. The workshop will present general information on leveraging LEED concepts into historic projects and implementing green strategies and modifications necessary for a sustainable design.
